Position Title Southern African Community Outreach Worker (P/T):
POSITION: The primary duties of the SA Community Outreach Worker is to ensure that eligible Southern Africans in Montgomery County are informed about the resources available to them through Southern African Community USA for food assistance.
DURATION: Part-Time (October – Feb 2021).
PAY: hourly, based on experience

The mission of the SACU is to unite all citizens, descendants and friends of Southern Africa in the USA through various activities and events, and to increase the visibility of Southern Africans in the USA whilst contributing to the overall development of the Southern African community.” Our vision is to be the leading voice and resource on Southern Africa.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following statements for this position reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all the duties required that may be inherent in the position.
This is a remote position.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Conduct outreach a minimum of three times a week.
- Document each outreach contact during or after each outreach attempt.
- Responsible for tallying outreach contacts and completing enrollment forms for enrollees.
- Responsible for proactively finding enrollees in our target community.
- Distribute products to clients – contactless (optional).
EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS AND SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY EVENT
Participation in virtual community town halls or other events as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Successful completion of paid outreach worker virtual training.
EXPERIENCE: A non-judgmental, empathetic, caring individual with the ability to listen well and to demonstrate confidentiality and respect for clients of all ethnic, religious and socio-economic groups. Must be open minded, flexible, responsible, engaging, and self-motivated. Needs to be comfortable talking about health and nutrition information and social safety net programs. Must be comfortable speaking in front of small and large audiences.
KNOWLEDGE: Ability to interact with people in a mature, professional, and pleasant manner. Interest in public speaking. No previous experience necessary but knowledge of any of the Southern African country communities in the USA or prior experience working with southern Africans preferred. Basic Computer skills; e-mail and keyboard skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: long periods of time on the phone or using video conferencing software during outreach or presentations. Ability required to lift objects up to twenty-five pounds and provide contactless delivery to clients is desired but not required. Having a reliable means of transportation and be willingness to provide contactless delivery to client is desired but not required.
