Southern African Community USA provided food packages for kids at Zambian Independence Day Event.
SACU attended the Zambian community event at a winery in Maryland to let the Zambian community know about SACU’s partnership with Manna Food Center and to hand out food packages for kids. The food packages consisted of delicious food that kids love to eat that is also nutritious.
The food packets were provided courtesy of SACU’s partner, Manna Food Center, a non-profit organization based in Maryland that works to fight hunger in Montgomery County, Maryland. In attendance at the event was Manna Food Center representative Agar Mbianda, who serves as their Community Outreach Manager.
SACU Director, Omega Tawonezvi spoke at the event to bring attention to the Zambian community that their are southern Africans from Zambia that may be in need of food assistance. She also let attendees know that if they or anyone they know are in need, they can contact board members from the Association of Zambians in the DMV to put them in contact with SACU. Alternatively, she said they could contact SACU or Manna Food Center directly.
The Association of Zambians in the DMV convened the Zambian community in the Washington DC metro area to celebrate Zambia’s Independence. The event , Heritage Family Day took place at Rocklands Farm Winery in Poolesville, Maryland on October 24th, 2021. Zambia became independent of the United Kingdom and prime minister Kenneth Kaunda became the inaugural president on this day in 1964. The event was well attended by Zambians and friends of Zambia living in the area.
