Union Party & Picnic 2014
In 2014 we had our second event weekend in late August. The weekend kicked off with our first fashion show which was held at the Civic Center in downtown Silver Spring. It featured designers from Southern African and the Diaspora. The Fashion show featured Sifa Love Designs (Democratic Republic of Congo), Ma Winny (Tanzania), Marlene Couture (South Africa), and Mlambo Designs (South Africa). It also includes well known mainstream design lines direct from Southern Africa such as Namibia’s HemLine, and South Africa’s Sister Bucks. Models included Miss Zambia and Miss Namibia USA. This was the first Southern African fashion show in the United States that aimed to show case the diversity of fashion in Southern Africa. It included a fashion show after party held in downtown Silver Spring. The picnic was held at Valley Mill Special Park and had greater attendance than the inaugural event. The Malawian team was crowned the champion for soccer, and the Zimbabwean and Namibian teams tied for netball. The official party was held at Tatoo bar in Washington D.C where attendees danced to the sounds of Southern Africa. The weekend’s events concluded with a professionals networking breakfast where a Zimbabwean professional talked to the attendees about networking a job skill. This event was covered on Voice of America.
Union Party & Picnic 2013
In 2013 , we had our inaugural event Weekend in early September, dubbed “Southern African Union Party and Picnic”. This featured a party and picnic which brought together Southern Africans for the first time. The “Union Picnic” event was held at Valley Mill Park in Silver Spring and drew about 500 Southern Africans. The “Union Party” was held in Bethesda, Maryland and drew about 200 people. Southern African in the area and friends of Southern Africa were very excited about these inaugural events and showed support for the mission, vision and objectives of the organization. The event was covered in the press by Voice of America’s Africa News 54.
