We celebrate and uplift the rich cultures, traditions, and artistic expressions of Southern Africa, increasing their visibility and appreciation. Although our cultures are wonderfully diverse—each with its own languages, histories, and artistic styles—they share deep common threads of community, creativity, and resilience, and narratives. Through our programs and activities, we honor both the uniqueness of each tradition and the shared heritage that connects Southern Africans across borders.
Through various programs and activities—from cultural festivals such as Ubuntu Festival and fashion showcases to dance, and storytelling—we create spaces where Southern African creativity thrives and our shared identity is central.
Featured Community Events & Activities
Ubuntu Festival
The Ubuntu Festival is an award‑winning celebration of Southern African culture in the heart of downtown Silver Spring. The festival brings hundreds of people together in the spirit of ubuntu — “I am because we are”. The festival transforms downtown Silver Spring into a vibrant street celebration filled with Southern African music, food, art, storytelling, and shared community experiences. Crowds gather to enjoy dance workshops, live performances, fashion showcases, vendors, and interactive cultural activities led by artists from across the United States and directly from Southern Africa. The festival also features booths from Southern African embassies, businesses, and artisans, creating a dynamic space where culture, creativity, and community pride come alive.

Our events showcase the vibrancy, innovation, and cultural depth of Southern African fashion. We highlight designers from the local diaspora as well as celebrated creators from across Southern Africa, bringing their unique perspectives, textiles, and craftsmanship to U.S. audiences. We have hosted fashion full fashion shows at events feature runway presentations, fashion vendors, jewelry designers, and artisan booths that reflect the region’s diverse aesthetic traditions. Storytelling has also been at the heart of the events where we not only show the clothes, but we tell the story of their places, creating a platform where cultural narratives and contemporary design meet. In addition to hosting our own shows, we proudly participate in local fashion events—such as the Lilly Water Festival—representing Southern African fashion on broader stages and strengthening cultural visibility throughout the community.
Lastly, fashion is everywhere at our events. The celebration often extends beyond the stage — you might find yourself admiring the vibrant styles of the person sitting next to you. Southern African Dance!
During the cultural events we host, dance has always been a central part of our programs. We regularly feature dance performances at our gatherings — whether between fashion show segments, during our Southern African Reunion picnics, or through dance workshops at the Ubuntu Festival where we teach audiences Southern African dance moves. Even outside of formal performances, we create spaces where our community can simply enjoy moving to the rhythms of Southern Africa.

Our social networking and meetup events play a vital role in strengthening the Southern African community. These gatherings create relaxed, welcoming spaces where Southern Africans and friends of the region can connect, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships.

Food tastes better when it reminds you of home. Food is an essential part of our activities and events, bringing people together through the familiar tastes and aromas of home. We partner with licensed Southern African food vendors, caterers, and farmers to support our gatherings, and we uplift Southern African–owned or themed restaurants whose ingredients and traditions shape our culinary heritage. Whether at festivals, picnics, or cultural showcases, the food we serve helps create a warm, communal atmosphere where culture is shared, remembered, and enjoyed.
